Himalaya Steel Mills Services Pvt Ltd (HSMS) utilizes specially designed mobile equipment to handle the extreme temperatures and abrasiveness inherent in slag, while ensuring uninterrupted service to the steel making furnace. HSMS also provides specially designed slag pots as well as all related maintenance for those pots and equipment, allowing its customer to focus all of its energy on what it does best – making steel. HSMS utilizes in–house engineers with expertise in slag handling operations to design, construct, and maintain slag dumping stations that accommodate each particular mill’s layout and operation.
After slag cooling and excavation from the dump stations, slag is transported and fed into the metal separation plant where metallics are upgraded for reuse as raw material (Scrap) to the steel mill and the slag is further refined for value–added applications.

The company is engaged in complete slag handling services at the LD#3 Steel Melting Shop of Tata Steel Jamshedpur Steel Works.The company provides state-of-the-art equipment for handling the molten slag at the BOF Furnace. Slag Pot Carriers supplied by Kress Corporation of USA are used to lift & dump the molten slag supplied in slag pots into specially designed slag dumping pits.
Kress Slag Pot Carriers are special purpose custom built machines and are designed to lift, carry & dump slag pots in the shortest possible time. These machines are less capital intensive than the traditional overhead cranes and offer flexibility to operate long distances or open in open areas if required to dump slag.Slag dumped in pits is cooled by water sprays for specified duration. The cooled slag is dug using Tata Hitachi make ZX-650 Shovel type Excavators and loaded onto Euclid Dumpers of carrying capacity 35T and transported to the Material Recovery Plant of Tata Steel.

HSMS's parent company Levy has over 102 years of experience of designing, building and operating State of Art Material Recovery Plants for the processing of steel slags. Over these years, Levy have developed and refined their MRPs so that they are the most efficient in the world in terms of throughput; costs; quality and yield of metallic scrap produced, and quality of slag aggregate produced. It is this experience that Levy have used in preparing this technical proposal.
In addition to an efficient MRP, just as important, is the modus operandi for feeding the plant. To this end, Levy have now developed the Eclipse system, which revolutionizes the method for handling slag at the MRP and Drop-balling operations.

Road Making
Road Making
HSMS and the Levy Group has the capability of developing aggregate from steel slag in various sizes. This slag aggregate product can be used as a substitute for natural aggregates for road making.
Steel slag aggregate has been successfully used for making asphalt and used for making motorable roads and highways in countries like USA, Australia & Thailand to name a few.
Trials carried out at the Steel City of Jamshedpur for top-surfacing have been highly successful.
Permissions have been applied for at CRRI to try out the same for road making pan India.
